How To Have Self-Control – Focus on The Mind, Not Your Habit

2 Corinthians 10:4. If we are looking for how to have self-control in our lives, most quick-fix plans focus on breaking our habits. Examples of quick-fix plans include smoking patches, diet pills, seminars, and so on. These quick-fix plans focus on our habits, when the real problem is in our mind and thoughts. The Bible teaches us that the real battle for self-control is in our mind . The bad habits that we have are really symptoms of sinful strongholds in our mind. What most of us think are bad habits are also considered to be sin to God.

Imagination Without the Knowledge of God

Genesis 11:6. Our imagination without the restraint of knowledge and wisdom is a dangerous thing. Our imagination opens our minds to all things and ideas: both good ideas and bad ideas. Bad ideas and thoughts can lead us to all types of sin and being disobedient to God. These sins can include adultery, envy, stealing, hating, and even killing to name a few. This is what happen to the people that built the Tower of Babel. The people used their imagination to build the great Tower of Babel, but they did not use wisdom.

Nature vs Nurture Debate – Vain Imagination Lacking the Knowledge of God

Romans 1:21. The nature vs nurture debate is based on vain imagination lacking the knowledge of God. Now why do I say this? Many great scholars have studied this argument, but did they consider the all-powerful nature of God as a factor in influencing the nature of a person? If you make the argument that it is just in someone's nature to be a thief or a murderer, this argument implies that God is not all-powerful. If you take the argument that a person is nurtured by their environment to be a homosexual or habitual liar, again, how can God be all-powerful and this argument be true?

Without Godly Knowledge Our Imagination Produces Fear, Hate, and Lust

Genesis 6:5. Our imagination among other things allows fear, worry, phobias, and anxiety to rule our lives. It can be prudent to be fearful of snakes, dogs, or life-threatening situations, but we should not put this fear above God. If we have an uncontrollable phobia against dogs or worms, we are letting our imagination get away with us and breaking fellowship with God.
