Books on What Love Is
Love is Many Things, But It is Not Selfish
1 Corinthians 13:4. Love is patience. Love is kind. Love is not selfish, envious, nor prideful. Love will be patience no matter what the situation. Love will be kind to everyone whether they deserve it or not. Selfish people seek only to satisfy their flesh. Love does not. Envy will lust for things that it does not have. Love does not. Prideful people puff themselves up. Love does not (1 Corinthians 13:4, "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up").
1 CORINTHIANS 13 BIBLE SCRIPTURE 1 Corinthians 13:4, "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,"
Love is the Fulfillment of God's Will
Romans 13:10. Love is a characteristic that God desires everyone to possess. The love that God desires for us is a special type of love called “agape” love. Agape love is defined as unmerited favor. This is a love that we show to others even if they do not deserve our loving kindness. Agape love is the love that God shows to all of mankind with the offer of salvation and eternal life through Jesus Christ, His Son. This type of love never shows ill will to anyone. It is the love we show when we love our neighbor as we love ourselves. We have agape love when we can truly love others no matter if they are hateful, they are evil, or even repulsive. This is the agape love that God want to see in us. When we display agape love to others, we are fulfilling God's will (Romans 13:10, “Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law”).

Love is the Greatest of the Christian Virtues
1 Corinthians 13:13. Christian theologians have traditionally identified faith, hope, and charity (love) as the three Christian virtues (Three Theological Virtues). Of the three Christian virtues, love is the greatest (1 Corinthians 13:13, “1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity”). Faith, hope, and love are key Christian virtues today as they have been throughout the history of Christianity. Christian virtue faith means steadfastness in belief that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Saviour. Christian virtue hope is the expectation, the trust, that God's promises are true. Christian virtue love is “agape” love defined as unmerited favor. This is a love that is selfless, unconditional, and voluntary loving-kindness. As the scripture says, “... the greatest of these is charity” (love).
