Dealing With Adultery – Love Not Lust
Romans 13:9. When dealing with adultery you have to realize that adultery is lust, not love. From God's perspective, no one can say that they committed adultery out of love. The Bible defines love as unmerited favor. Adultery at best is a “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch your back” love. In the case of adultery, it is “you fulfill my lusts, and I will fulfill yours.” There is no unmerited love involved in adultery. Adultery shows no love for your neighbor. In an adulterous relationship, the adulterer is stealing and coveting their neighbor’s wife or husband. The Bible tells us to love all our neighbors equally. You are in conflict with Jesus’ commandment of loving your neighbor as yourself when you commit adultery with your neighbor’s wife or husband (Romans 13:9, “For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself”).
