A Father's Authority Does Not Overshadow A Son's Personal Responsibility to Do Right
Jeremiah 31:29. Most of us are deeply influenced by our parents. This can be in a good or bad way. The Bible tells us to honor our mother and father, and we should respect their authority. At the same time, we cannot use our parents or our past as an excuse to do wrong in the sight of God. Jeremiah 31:29 says, “In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge.” Thanks to Jesus Christ, we do not need to be a victim of our past. If our father was an alcoholic, that does not mean we need to be an alcoholic. Whatever our fathers did or did not do, does not need to be our fate. If our father eats sour grapes, we no longer as children need to taste the effects of our father's actions. We are to respect and honor the authority of our fathers, but we are free in Jesus Christ.
