Human Kindness is All About Having Mercy Toward Others

2 Samuel 9:3. Human kindness is closely linked to the concept of mercy. Mercy is defined in the dictionary as “compassionate or kindly forbearance shown toward an offender, an enemy, or other person in one's power; compassion, pity, or benevolence:”. To have mercy on someone is at the heart of human kindness. It is easy to be nice to someone who is nice to you, but what about people that have hurt you, people that you supervise or control, people that hate you, and people that are just plain bad? When you have the capacity to treat everyone with the same respect and compassion, this is the essence of human kindness. David in the Bible showed human kindness when he had compassion for Mephibosheth, the lame son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul (2 Samuel 9:3, “And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet”). Here King David was in the midst of prosperity and peace, but he had an earnest desire to show human kindness to his enemy who were of the house of Saul.
